What to Bring to Your First Range Class: A Tallahassee Checklist
By the instructors at Armor Firearms & Training, Tallahassee, FL
Show up prepared, and the day is safer and more fun. Here's the checklist we give new students, plus a few tips for North Florida range days.
The must-haves
1. A valid photo ID
Bring a driver's license or other government photo ID. It's required for the concealed carry live-fire test.
2. Your signed waiver
Sign it online before you come, and check-in goes faster. Adults (18+) sign the adult range waiver. Under 18, a parent or guardian signs the youth waiver.
3. Eye and ear protection
Bring shooting glasses and hearing protection (earmuffs, foam plugs or both). Don't own any? Eye and ear protection is $5, plus FL sales tax. In a private lesson, it's included.
4. Your gun, unloaded and cased
If you own a handgun, bring it. If you already carry one, bring that one so you can train with it. We recommend transporting it unloaded, in a case, and waiting for your instructor's direction before you take it out.
No gun yet? For group classes, a loaner gun and ammo are $25, plus FL sales tax. Private lessons include the gun.
5. Ammunition: 50 to 100 rounds
For Learn to Shoot and private lessons, bring 50 to 100 rounds, depending on your experience, if you're bringing your own gun. Double-check that it's the right caliber for your gun. Need some? Shop our ammo. There's no Florida sales tax on ammo through Dec 31, 2026.
What to wear
- Closed-toe shoes. Spent brass is hot and lands everywhere.
- A crew-neck shirt. A low neckline can catch a hot casing.
- A cap with a brim for shade, and to help keep brass away from your face.
- A sturdy belt if you'll shoot from a holster.
- Layers. Fall mornings in Tallahassee can start cool and warm up fast.
Comfort items
- Water
- Sunscreen and bug spray
- A snack for longer sessions
- Your phone or a notebook, to jot down what your instructor tells you to practice
Arrive early
For Learn to Shoot, arrive 15 minutes before class starts. For the concealed carry live-fire test, arrive at 8:45 AM. Classes are held at our private range in NW Leon County, FL. Exact range address given after booking.
After class: three good habits
- Make sure your gun is unloaded before you case it. Your instructor will show you how to check.
- Clean it soon, following your manufacturer's instructions.
- Store it securely at home, with ammo locked up separately, especially if kids or guests are around.
