Your First Handgun Lesson in Tallahassee: What to Expect

By the instructors at Armor Firearms & Training, Tallahassee, FL

Nervous? That's normal. It means you're taking it seriously. Our instructors have taught hundreds of people to shoot, from first-timers to experienced shooters. Here's what to expect so you can show up relaxed and ready.

Safety comes first, always

Before anyone handles a gun, your instructor goes over the core safety rules:

  1. Treat every gun as if it's loaded.
  2. Keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction.
  3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target and you've decided to shoot.
  4. Know your target and what's beyond it.

A certified firearms instructor stays with you every step of the way.

What a typical first lesson covers

Every lesson is built around the student, so yours may run differently. A typical first lesson covers:

  • The safety rules and how the range runs
  • How a handgun works, and how to load, unload and check that it's clear
  • Grip and stance
  • Sight alignment and smooth trigger control
  • Live fire with your instructor beside you
  • Feedback on what to practice next

Adults sign the waiver online before they arrive. Under 18, a parent or guardian signs the youth waiver. Bring a photo ID.

2-hour private lesson: $145 per person

The 2-hour private lesson includes the concealed carry training certificate. Before your session, you watch our online class video and take its 7-question test, plus two short training videos. Then you spend about 90 minutes at the range. It's also all-inclusive.

Private means private. Once you book a slot, no one else can join. Bring up to 10 people: family, friends, co-workers or your church group. Pick a Saturday slot on Calendly (1-hour or 2-hour), then pay online.

Common first-timer worries

"I'm worried about recoil." Your instructor will help you with grip and stance, and with choosing a gun you're comfortable with.

"I don't own a gun yet." Good. Try a few before you buy one. In a private lesson, the guns are included.

"I'll be the only beginner." Learn to Shoot is a beginner class. In a private lesson, it's just you and your group.

"What if I'm bad at it?" Everyone starts somewhere. Common beginner habits like anticipating recoil or jerking the trigger are often corrected quickly with good instruction.
